I took the car to the mechanic today and the "believe" based on the codes in VAGCOM that it's the parking brake control module. I would hate to spend (roughly) $2000 to change this out with out certainty and find it was only a fault Parking switch.

Open Rear Parking Brake. Prerequisites: Connect a battery charger as per repair manual. Ignition on, engine off. Cycle the Parking Brake ON, then OFF first. The normal hydraulic brake pedal must be applied before the EPB will operate. The parking brake MUST be OFF or Basic Settings cannot operate.
Ive got a b5 and my dad has a b6(07 passat variant), but he's having problems with his e-brake. it would never engage and always gave a parking brake fault. so he took it in today for regular service, they said that its not the switch but they said they cant fix it without replacing some board, which happens to cost $1000 just in parts
